February is Black History Month. At St. Clair Catholic, it is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the achievements of Black Canadians and to reflect on their stories, through their experiences and accomplishments.
“We have a rich local history, with abolitionist heroes who helped Black men and women to escape slavery in the south and find new lives in freedom at the terminus of the Underground Railroad,” says Scott Johnson, Director of Education. “From abolitionists, to war heroes, to sports celebrities and inventors, we celebrate the distinguished Black Canadians who have helped to make Canada a rich multi-cultural land.”
Many resources have been curated for students and staff, as they explore Canada’s Black history, in partnership with local Black history museums, including Uncle Tom’s Cabin & Museum, the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum, the Black Mecca Museum in Chatham, and the Chatham-Kent and Lambton public libraries.
“The theme for 2022 is February Forever: Celebrating Black History Today and Every Day,” says Mr. Johnson. “We will embrace this theme as we honour Black History Month in our classrooms, with learning that stretches beyond the month of February.
