Virtual Birch Bark Learning Session Held at St. John Fisher Catholic School

Grade 5/6 and 6/7 students at St. John Fisher Catholic School in Forest recently participated in a virtual learning session about Birch bark.  The session was facilitated by Naomi Smith, a First Nations artist, curator and educator.

During the session, students explored the importance of Birch bark to Indigenous people, through the sharing of facts and traditional stories.  During a hands-on activity, students created a model of a Birch bark cup.

“Through this interesting and inter-active learning opportunity, our students were able to gain a new understanding of the importance of natural materials to Indigenous life,” says Kerri Jordan, Principal of St. John Fisher Catholic School.  “I want to thank Ms. Smith for her time and for leading our students through this interesting and meaningful experience.”
