St. Anne Catholic School in Sarnia finished its 26th annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 23. In the two-and-a-half decades since the first run, the school has raised more than $166,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
This year’s theme was I’m Not a Quitter! It’s a concept that is embraced by Grade 3 student Leah March. At a young age, Lea was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, the same form of cancer that Terry Fox had. In Leah’s case, amputation was not required. During a 16-hour surgery, a bone in her right upper arm was replaced with a bone from her left leg. Following lengthy treatment, Leah is now running and walking with her friends … and participated in the school’s Terry Fox Run.
“Leah is inspiring our Gator community to do what they can to carry on Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer,” says Lori Barbato, a teacher at St. Anne and organizer of the school’s Terry Fox Run since the beginning. “I am so proud of our entire school community for their tremendous support of this initiative every year!”
