Students at six St. Clair Catholic schools have had the privilege of a visit from former NHL pro hockey player Jason Simon. A member of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, he played for 12 different pro circuits during his hockey days. Now, he’s a motivational speaker, who talks to kids about his successes and struggles and the importance of physical and mental well-being.
“Jason shared his journey as an intergenerational residential school survivor, whose two grandparents attended residential schools,” says Cortnee Goure, Indigenous Education Lead for St. Clair Catholic. “His grandparents taught him how to be resilient in the face of challenges.”
Mr. Simon spoke to students at Holy Trinity, St. Matthew, St. Elizabeth, Holy Family, Ursuline College and St. Patrick’s Catholic High School. His aim is to inspire young people to set goals and stay focused with a determination to achieve them.
The visits were arranged as part of a series of events throughout the week of September 26 to 30, as St. Clair Catholic observed National Truth and Reconciliation Week. For more information, visit the Board website here.
