After a two-year interruption, the UCC Cares Team is once again fighting hunger with its annual Halloween Lancers Scare Hunger non-perishable food drive.
“This is one of our most important food drives in the entire year,” says Brenda LeClair, Executive Director of Chatham Outreach for Hunger. “It comes just after Thanksgiving and helps us to replenish our shelves in time for Christmas. We are grateful for the support from the UCC Cares Team!”
The Halloween food drive at UCC began about 15 years ago. This year, students will be collecting non-perishable food items throughout the City of Chatham.
“We’re hoping to hit every street in the city,” says Margaret Palmer, Chaplaincy Leader at UCC. “Anyone who would like to contribute, but won’t be home, should please turn the porch light on and leave a donation in a bag on the step. We’ll make sure to pick it up.”
Students will be wearing ID badges and will collect food between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31st. All donations will go to Chatham Outreach for Hunger.
Students have set a target of 15,000 non-perishable food items for the one night campaign.
“We will be thankful for every item that comes in,” says Ms. LeClair. “We are blessed with very generous donors.”
In 2021, there were more than 5,000 visits to the Chatham Outreach for Hunger foodbank, with nearly 300 new visits.
