The Social Justice and Wellbeing Club at St. Anne Catholic School, Sarnia recently led a water awareness and conservation campaign. During research, students discovered that in Ontario there are 23 Indigenous communities, which are under boil water advisories. Students partnered with Ms. Barbato’s Grade 2/3 class to brainstorm ways in which St. Anne Catholic School could help.
The school applied for and received a $500 grant from Learning for a Sustainable Future, which was used to buy water bottles. The water bottles were sold in a school-wide fundraiser, the proceeds of which were used to purchase a free-standing water filtration system.
“We contacted Principal Steve Styers at the Chippewas of the Thames School and he accepted our donation of the water filtration system,” says Stephanie Orrange, Principal of St. Anne Catholic School.
The Social Justice and Wellbeing Club and the Grade 2/3 class were invited guests at the Chippewas of the Thames School Pow Wow on June 23.
“St. Anne is grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a special celebration!” says Ms. Orrange.
