Over three days, more than 650 Grade 4 and 5 students from St. Clair Catholic schools in Chatham-Kent and Lambton County, and 75 student leaders from Ursuline College, participated in the 12th annual Chatham-Kent and Lambton Children’s Water Festival at the C.M. Wilson Conservation Area.
The festival delivers hands-on educational learning experiences at more than 40 stations, based on environmental themes connected to water, including use of water, water contamination, aquatic habitat issues, conservation, pollution, eco-systems and much more.
The festival also includes First Nations traditional ecological knowledge, highlighting partnerships with local First Nations communities in our watershed, to enhance stewardship and species-at-risk efforts.
Important local issues are also covered – including lakeshore flooding and erosion, algae blooms in lakes and rivers and ways to reduce phosphorus run-off.
“This annual festival offers tremendous experiential learning for our students about water – a resource that we so often take for granted,” says Scott Johnson, Director of Education. “Thank you to the many volunteers, who help to make this important event possible each year.”
