Ursuline College Chatham was buzzing with excitement on Friday, April 26, 2024, as it played host to a spirited 3v3 basketball qualifier event for Special Olympics Ontario. The Lancers, showing their unwavering support, brought together the senior boys’ basketball team to coach the Life Skills students, while LancerLink leaders took charge of facilitating, guiding, and organizing the event alongside school staff.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, the Lancers cheer team not only supported all participants but also delighted the crowd with their spirited performances after every basket and between games. Schools from across Chatham-Kent, including Chatham Christian and John McGregor Secondary School, enthusiastically entered over 30 athletes to take part in the event.
Among the standout performers were students from UCC’s Life Skills program who competed fiercely in the championship qualifying games. Christian Konstantinou, Royal McDougal, Nathan Caporale, and Lucas Chrysler showcased their skills on the court, supported by a cheering crowd. Two additional teams, including UCC players Noah Collins, Laiken Kelly, Luc Arbour, Brennan Day, Lucas Osborne, and Cody Ducedre, engaged in friendly, sportsmanship-driven matches.
The newly renovated gym facility at UCC provided an ideal setting for the event, with every team warmly welcomed. Student spectators filled the stands, erupting in cheers as announcers introduced each team with their banner to run through. The lively atmosphere extended beyond students, with parents and guests joining in to support and applaud the efforts of all involved.
Reflecting on the day’s events, the UCC community expressed immense pride, encapsulated in their rallying cry: “We are all very Lancer Loud and Lancer Proud!” It was a day filled with camaraderie, sportsmanship, and celebration, underscoring the power of unity and inclusion through sports.
