Matilda: The Musical Delights Audiences in a Spectacular, Sold-Out Run at UCC

In a dazzling display of talent and community spirit, Ursuline College Chatham recently staged a triumphant production of “Matilda: The Musical,” marking its first musical production since 2019. The five-day sold-out run captivated audiences, with all eight performances drawing in a total of 4000 patrons who eagerly filled the theater seats.

The anticipation for this theatrical extravaganza was palpable, with tickets selling out a remarkable three days before opening night. From April 30th to May 4th, audiences were treated to a mesmerizing spectacle, including four evening shows and four matinees tailored for feeder schools and various community groups, such as the Ursuline Sisters and UCC students themselves.

Behind the scenes, approximately 70 students showcased their diverse talents, with roles ranging from onstage performances to crucial backstage support. The production boasted a multifaceted team, with students contributing to the orchestra, hair and makeup, costumes, stage crew, sound and lighting, set construction, and various technical aspects of the show.

However, the success of “Matilda: The Musical” would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of an army of volunteers. More than 40 staff, retirees, alumni, parents, and community partners lent their time and expertise to bring this ambitious production to life.

Reflecting on the overwhelming success of the show, Megan Biondi, one of the production’s directors and an English teacher at UCC, expressed immense pride in the students’ achievements. “We are thrilled that the show has been such a success! We are proud of our students and excited that the community has supported our show,” she exclaimed.

Jordan Matteis, the producer, and a guidance counselor at UCC, echoed Biondi’s sentiments, emphasizing the crucial role of community support in realizing the production’s vision. “We are indebted to our volunteers who dreamed big to make this show a reality,” said Matteis. “This show’s success proves that the greater community is eager to support our talented youth and the arts. We are humbled by the community’s response.”

As the curtains close on this unforgettable production of “Matilda: The Musical,” UCC celebrates not only the incredible talent showcased on stage but also the spirit of collaboration and community that made it all possible. With hearts full of gratitude and anticipation, the UCC community eagerly awaits the next chapter in its theatrical journey.
