Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School in Sarnia, renowned for its cultural enrichment, recently achieved a historic milestone with its first-ever World Fair. The event, held in the school gymnasium, encapsulated the essence of the many cultures that comprise the school community.
With meticulous planning and enthusiastic involvement from families, students, staff, and the wider school community, the fair surpassed all expectations, emerging as a tremendous success.
Guests were immersed in a kaleidoscope of experiences with booths showcasing the rich tapestry of traditions, cuisines, and artifacts from various countries and cultures. Whether savoring exotic delicacies, admiring handmade crafts, or engaging in enlightening conversations with families, visitors found themselves transported to distant lands without ever leaving the school.
English Language Learner (ELL) educator Heather Hagan feels proud to see Newcomer and Canadian families communicating and interacting together, “This event highlights our values in Catholic Education and emphasizes the importance of diversity of language and culture in our community. We have provided an environment where Newcomers feel valued and welcome.”
The festivities also featured performances by students of Gregory A. Hogan, captivating audiences throughout the evening. From the rhythmic beats of traditional dance performances to the spectacle of a Brazilian rodeo demonstration, every moment was filled with energy and excitement.
Another highlight of the fair was the enchanting French Café experience, masterfully orchestrated by the grade 8 students. With an ambiance reminiscent of a quaint Parisian bistro, guests savored delectable dishes and beverages while engaging in delightful exchanges, further deepening their appreciation for French culture. To pay tribute to French-Canadian heritage, poutine was also featured on the menu.
Principal Derek Morrison expressed immense pride in the school community’s enthusiasm and effort, remarking, “The World Fair offered a unique opportunity for learning and engagement. Through this experience, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the wide range of cultures that make Gregory A. Hogan a truly global community.”
Throughout the 2nd floor of the school, a science fair was on exhibit, where students from various grades proudly presented captivating science experiments and creative demonstrations.
The evening was truly a celebration of knowledge, diversity, friendship, and family through Catholic education.
