Celebrating the Success of UCC Apprenticeship Students

The recent achievements of UCC students in their apprenticeship programs at St. Clair College underscore the immense value of hands-on learning and early career exploration. Two standout students, Rowan Taylor and Remi Steen, have made remarkable progress in their respective fields.

Rowan Taylor, UCC Grade 12 Student

Rowan Taylor, a Grade 12 student, recently completed her Level 1 Hairstylist Apprenticeship training at St. Clair College. Reflecting on her experience, Rowan shared, “This experience has taught me so much more about the hairstyling industry and has taught me many new techniques. It has prepared me in many ways for when I leave St. Clair and move onto my apprenticeship.” Her journey began with an all-day co-op placement that laid a strong foundation for her training. “I learned the basics at my co-op placement which helped me with the hairstyling program. My co-op placement gave me insights into what I would be studying,” she added. Rowan strongly recommends the program to other students, stating, “Yes, I think it is a great opportunity for students who are looking into this career, and it really gives them a taste of what our work will be like after school. I think it could also help students be more comfortable around new people which is a very important aspect of this career.”

Remi Steen, UCC Grade 12 Student

Remi Steen, also in Grade 12, is making significant strides in the electrical trade. During the last semester of his senior year, Remi completed a full-day co-op placement for three months, which he credits as crucial preparation for his program. In May and June, Remi enrolled in the Level 1 Electrician Apprenticeship program at St. Clair College. Despite the demanding workload, Remi found himself fully engaged and motivated. “I don’t find myself having to force myself to do the work as I would with certain subjects in school, simply because I have an interest in the subject. The instructors are eager to teach you the material and help you step by step through the labs. The best part for me has been meeting new people in my program who share the same interest,” he remarked. Expressing his gratitude, Remi stated, “Overall it is a great course to get ahead of your career and I’m honoured to be given this opportunity.”

Warren Seton, OYAP/SHSM Lead, praised the dedication and achievements of the students, saying, “Rowan and Remi exemplify the benefits of apprenticeship programs, showcasing how early career exploration and hands-on experience can lead to success. Their stories are inspiring and highlight the opportunities available to all our students.”

Rowan and Remi’s achievements highlight the importance of experiential learning and early career exposure. Their stories serve as inspiration for fellow students to pursue their passions through apprenticeship programs. Congratulations to all the apprenticeship students at UCC for their hard work and dedication!
