Be part of history at Ontario’s first-ever Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Conference, Building Success in Our Children & Youth, hosted by the St. Clair Catholic District School Board. Join us on October 2 and 3, 2024, at the Delta Armouries in London, where educators, health professionals, parent groups, and researchers will gather to explore the transformative power of SEL in schools, homes, and communities.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has emerged as a cornerstone for developing the skills needed for lifelong success. These skills are taught and nurtured by the caring adults children interact with, especially teachers, who play a critical role in the classroom environment. SEL provides a comprehensive and universal approach to promote healthy growth and development—not just for children, but for everyone. It also serves as a key element in preventative mental health, equipping students with the emotional tools they need to thrive in both school and life.
The conference will feature leading experts in the field, including Dr. Kim Schonert-Reichl from CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), who will discuss transformative SEL practices that empower students, strengthen family and community partnerships, and address educational disparities. Joining her is child psychiatrist and knowledge translator Jean Clinton, who will delve into the critical role SEL plays in our understanding of ourselves and others from childhood to adulthood.
Other featured speakers include Dr. Julie George (Waaseyaabino Kwe), who will focus on the role of cultural identity in SEL for Indigenous youth, and Dr. Gina Cherkowski, who will share insights from Alberta’s research on SEL as a preventative mental health initiative. Attendees will also hear from dynamic SEL leaders like Karl A. Mercuri and a team of leaders from the SCCDSB who will provide practical, classroom-based strategies for implementing SEL system-wide.
“This is a unique opportunity for educators, health professionals, community and parent groups to learn from some of the leading voices in Social Emotional Learning,” said Chris Preece, Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead at SCCDSB. “We are incredibly excited to host this event and share insights that will help build success in our children and youth through SEL.”
Director of Education Scott Johnson emphasized the critical importance of SEL in schools: “Social Emotional Learning provides a comprehensive, universal approach to support the healthy development of all students. This conference is an important step in fostering environments where students not only learn academically but thrive emotionally and socially.”
