A Community United in Action: St. Anne Catholic School’s Inspiring 28th Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research

St. Anne Catholic School in Sarnia proudly celebrated its 28th Terry Fox Run, a significant community event that brings together students, families, and staff to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Over the years, the school has participated in 27 school day runs, contributing to a remarkable total of over $190,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

This year, the school set an ambitious goal to raise $10,000, which would bring their fundraising total to over $200,000. To motivate students, St. Anne offered exciting incentives, including an extended recess, pajama day, and movie day. The fundraising campaign, which ran until October 4, saw students achieve their first incentive by raising $2,000 in just one week. Donations can be made through School Cash Online and the St. Anne Terry Fox donation site.

The event holds special significance for the St. Anne community, as several students and family members are cancer survivors. One notable ambassador is Leah March, a St. Anne student who has bravely shared her story with classmates. Leah is not only a cancer survivor but also has the same type of cancer that Terry Fox had. Her inspiring message to “Try like Terry” has encouraged her peers to actively participate in the fundraising efforts. Leah expressed gratitude for the advancements in medical treatments, which have improved the lives of survivors like herself, thanks in part to the fundraising supported by the Terry Fox Foundation.

Present at St. Anne that day were Denise Kohlmeier, a long-time teacher and coach with St. Clair Catholic, along with her husband and family. They have been dedicated advocates for cancer research for over 30 years, organizing annual fundraising events such as Around the Bay on Mother’s Day and Fore the Cure.

In recognition of their outstanding efforts, St. Anne Catholic School was honoured by the Terry Fox Foundation in 2023 as one of the top 25 schools for fundraising across Canada. Nishi Bansal, Ambassador Program Manager for the Terry Fox Foundation, expressed her appreciation in a letter to the school community: “When Terry set out, 43 years ago, he could have never imagined that his torch would have been carried by so many future generations. We are so grateful to you for making sure that the flame stays lit and Terry’s passion to help those with cancer continues. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support and we look forward to working with you in 2023!”

Scott Johnson, Director of Education, praised the school’s dedication, noting, “St. Anne Catholic School has consistently demonstrated an incredible commitment to the Terry Fox Foundation and its mission. Their contributions stand out not only within our Board but across Ontario, showcasing the compassion and dedication of our students and staff.”

Principal Stephanie Orrange echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our community’s unwavering support and enthusiasm for the Terry Fox Run is truly inspiring. It not only fosters a sense of unity among our students and families but also honours those who have faced cancer. Together, we are making a difference.”

As the Terry Fox Run continues to inspire future generations, St. Anne Catholic School remains a shining example of community spirit and determination in the fight against cancer.
