St. Clair Catholic Students Explore Water Conservation at CK&L Water Festival

This past week, students from St. Clair Catholic District School Board participated in the Chatham-Kent Lambton Children’s Water Festival, held at C.M. Wilson Conservation Area. The event, designed for Grades 4 and 5, immersed students in hands-on learning experiences focused on water science, conservation, technology, and environmental protection. Over three days, 475 elementary students from St. Angela Merici, St. Elizabeth, St. Michael Ridgetown, St. Anne Blenheim, and Monsignor Uyen explored the essential role water plays in our world.

The festival featured 42 interactive learning stations aimed at teaching children about water conservation and the importance of protecting natural resources. Stations included engaging activities related to aquatic life, wastewater containment, and everyday water-saving practices, such as turning off the tap while brushing their teeth.

In addition to the elementary students, 75 secondary students from Ursuline College attended the Wednesday session, volunteering to help facilitate the stations. These students not only guided younger participants through the activities but also strengthened their own understanding of environmental stewardship.

The CK&L Water Festival, running since 2007, is a collaborative effort between school boards, conservation authorities, and local community organizations. St. Clair Catholic has long supported the event, which closely aligns with curriculum goals and promotes the real-world application of water-related science and conservation principles.

“This event provides an incredible opportunity for students to connect with nature and understand the impact of their actions on the environment,” said Scott Johnson, Director of Education. “It’s wonderful to see our students engage in such meaningful, hands-on learning that fosters responsibility for protecting our water resources.”

The participation of both elementary and secondary students highlights St. Clair Catholic’s ongoing commitment to experiential learning and environmental education, fostering a lifelong appreciation for conservation efforts.
