St. Anne, Blenheim Installs Social Justice Food Pantry to Support Community Needs

St. Anne Catholic School in Blenheim has proudly unveiled its Social Justice Food Pantry, a dynamic initiative fueled by the collaborative spirit of students, staff, and local community members. Officially launched in late October, this pantry stands as a beacon of hope, providing essential non-perishable food items to those in need and embodying the principles of dignity, compassion, and support central to Catholic social teachings.

Under the leadership of Mrs. Friesen and the school’s Social Justice Group, this project underscores St. Anne’s commitment to making a difference. “I wanted to bring an experience to the students that would impact them in a way that nurtures giving back to their very own community. Students can give back to the community of Blenheim for years to come now that this pantry has been established,” says Mrs. Friesen.

The installation process brought together many caring hands, including the Social Justice Group students, Mr. and Mrs. Friesen, community member Bill Mayuk, and Mr. Girard, a teacher lead for the project. With their combined efforts, they ensured that the pantry was ready for its first round of contributions, exemplifying that with many hands, light work brings big results. This community support also extended to the Blenheim Youth Centre (BYC), which generously provided space on their property to house the pantry—special thanks to Emily, Evan, and the BYC Board of Directors for their commitment to the cause.

Principal Julie Knight expressed her pride, saying, “The pantry represents the heart of our community and the dedication of our students. They are learning to walk in Jesus’ footsteps by serving others with compassion and respect.”

To generate excitement and engagement, the school is launching an awareness campaign, using posters around town to invite the broader community to join in the pantry’s mission. Every donation helps support local families while strengthening the bonds within Blenheim.

Scott Johnson, Director of Education, commended the initiative, stating, “The Social Justice Food Pantry at St. Anne, Blenheim is a wonderful example of how schools can lead the way in nurturing compassion and support for those in need. This project reflects our shared commitment to making a positive impact in the community.”

The pantry will serve as a powerful symbol of shared responsibility, sustained by regular food drives and community involvement. This project fosters unity and empowers students to take meaningful action, embodying the spirit of love and respect for neighbours in need.
