Wallaceburg Students Participate in Mkwenmaanannig Giizhgad Observance on Indigenous Veterans Day

Students from St. Elizabeth, Holy Family, and Christ the King Catholic schools in Wallacebrug joined the Mkwenmaanannig Giizhgad observance on November 8, 2024, in honour of Indigenous Veterans Day. This annual event, hosted by the Bkejwanong Children’s Centre in partnership with Anishinaabe Kinomaagewgamig, Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig, and Bkejwanong Biiweziimag Kinomaagewgamig, brought students, staff, and community members together in a ceremony that pays tribute to both American and Canadian veterans.

The observance began with a walk from the Bkejwanong Children’s Centre to the Veteran’s Monument on Walpole Island, where students took part in a commemorative ceremony. Students were transported from their schools to participate, joining the walk on a beautiful autumn day to engage with local and Indigenous history.

“This event provided our students with a meaningful opportunity to honour Indigenous veterans while learning about the rich history and culture of our local Indigenous communities,” said Angèle Monette, Principal of Christ the King Catholic School. “It was inspiring to see them reflect on the importance of service and community.”

Superintendent of Education, Lisa Demers emphasized the significance of integrating Indigenous history and education into students’ learning. “Honouring Indigenous veterans and providing opportunities for students to learn from community events like Mkwenmaanannig Giizhgad enriches their understanding of history and heritage,” Demers stated. “This observance deepens our commitment to truth and reconciliation by fostering respect and appreciation for Indigenous contributions and traditions.”

St. Clair Catholic is grateful to the Bkejwanong community for welcoming students to this important day of reflection and learning.
