Students at St. Angela Merici Catholic School recently engaged in a unique Remembrance Day project that connected art, history, and local heritage. This initiative, led by teacher Marie Clark in collaboration with Michelle Robbins, curator of the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, gave students the opportunity to learn about the contributions of Black Canadian veterans while expressing their understanding and respect through handmade poppy art.
The Buxton Historical Museum provided learning materials and books, bringing to life stories of veterans like Lester “Bub” Brown, the oldest surviving Black Canadian veteran, from North Buxton, and the No. 2 Construction Battalion—Canada’s first and only all-Black battalion that included soldiers from Chatham-Kent. Mrs. Clark’s Grade 5/6 students explored these stories deeply and created individual poppy art pieces using various mediums, each capturing their unique interpretation of the iconic symbol of remembrance.

Mrs. Clark highlighted the significance of this hands-on project: “The poppy art encouraged students to explore not only their own creativity but also the historical legacy of veterans in our own community. It was a meaningful way for students to honor the sacrifices of those who served.”
School Principal, Juli Faubert, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. “Partnering with the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum has brought a new depth to our Remembrance Day studies,” she shared. “Our students gained a profound appreciation for the stories of these veterans, which broadened their understanding and sense of gratitude for those who have fought for our freedom.”
The students’ poppies are now on display as part of a commemorative exhibit at the Buxton National Historic Site and Museum, joining artifacts and exhibits honoring the service of Buxton veterans. Community members are encouraged to visit the museum to explore these moving tributes.
The exhibit runs Monday through Friday, 1:00 to 4:30 PM, with guided tours available until 3:15 PM.
