On November 6, UCC welcomed Grade 8 students from across Chatham-Kent for an exciting day of connection, exploration, and hands-on learning. With UCC’s Grade 9 students participating in Take Your Kids to Work Day, the school dedicated the day, known as Grade 8 Transition Day, to introducing Grade 8 students from across St. Clair Catholic elementary schools to what it means to be part of the Lancer community.
Highlights included a warm welcome presentation in UCC’s theatre, followed by a spirited pep rally in the gym, where LINK Leaders and other UCC students led cheers and team-building games. Throughout the day, LINK Leaders guided the Grade 8 students through a range of engaging activities, fostering connections and bringing the UCC community together in true Lancer spirit.
The visiting students toured various classrooms, participating in creative and educational activities. They explored science labs with telescopes, burners, and beakers; tried their hand at screen printing, portrait drawing, and Photoshop; and enjoyed sports and games in the gym. The interactive sessions, along with team-based challenges in classrooms, encouraged collaboration and gave the Grade 8 students a taste of the hands-on learning that defines UCC.
At lunchtime, students gathered in the cafeteria for a hearty pasta meal served by UCC staff, including Principal Lisa Harnarine. The day wrapped up with students creating their own Lancers swag—a memento of Grade 8 Day at UCC and a symbol of their excitement for what’s to come.
“Grade 8 Transition Day is an opportunity for these young students to see themselves as part of the UCC community,” shared Vice Principal Tiffany Clarke. “By introducing them to the programs, teachers, and students they’ll see next year, we’re making their transition to high school a bit easier and a lot more exciting.”
“Grade 8 Transition Day is all about making students feel welcomed and giving them a sense of belonging,” said Superintendent of Education, Chris Kehoe. “These experiences help build the strong, inclusive community we value at UCC, where students can thrive both academically and socially.”
Fueled by LINK Leaders, hands-on learning, and Lancer spirit, Grade 8 Day offered a vibrant preview of high school life, inspiring excitement and a strong sense of belonging among future Lancers.
UCC’s next transition event will take place on January 30 at 7pm in the UCC theatre and is open to the public!
