On November 14, UCC welcomed Dean Jacobs, a respected leader from the Walpole Island First Nation, to engage students in a meaningful presentation on Treaty Education. Jacobs, the founding director of the Walpole Island Heritage Centre, brought a wealth of knowledge on local treaties, land use, economic development, and environmental research to students.
Dean’s presentation invited students to explore the history and significance of treaties and their local relevance to Bkejwanong Territory. He offered insights into contemporary issues, including wind farms and economic initiatives, helping students connect historical themes to present-day realities. Jacobs’ approachable style and deep expertise resonated with students and staff alike.
“Having Dean Jacobs share his vast knowledge and lived experience with our students was truly incredible,” said Superintendent Lisa Demers. “This opportunity provided a unique lens into the importance of treaties and their impact on local communities.”
Jacobs, a former chief of Walpole Island First Nation, has dedicated his life to community-based research and education. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including honourary doctorates, medals from the Governor General of Canada, and recognition for his contributions to environmental sustainability.
St. Clair Catholic is grateful for the opportunity to host such an esteemed speaker and looks forward to further exploring Treaty Education, as well as Truth and Reconciliation.
