PALS Program Inspires Leadership and Connection at Sacred Heart, Sarnia

The Playground Activity Leaders in Schools (PALS) program at Sacred Heart, Sarnia is fostering leadership, physical activity, and a strong sense of community among students. Designed to encourage inclusivity and active play, PALS trains student leaders to organize and lead recess games, promoting teamwork and respect while creating a more engaging and supportive playground environment.

Margaret DeGurse, Principal of Sacred Heart, highlighted the program’s positive impact: “Through PALS, our students are taking on meaningful leadership roles, fostering friendships, and promoting a sense of belonging across our school community.”

In October, Sacred Heart students demonstrated the program’s significance during a presentation to the Board at the Catholic Education Centre. Student leaders not only inspired trustees and the Executive Council with their insights but also led them in fun recess games. Their enthusiasm and leadership were a highlight of the meeting.

Scott Johnson, Director of Education, reflected on the presentation: “It was exciting to witness our student leaders in action. Programs like PALS significantly enhance student well-being and build friendships, which are foundational to a positive school environment.”

The PALS program continues to expand as Child and Youth Worker Sarah Nelson partners with leaders from the local Health Unit to introduce students to new games and strategies. These efforts aim to further enhance recess activities and support the program’s ongoing development.
