This year’s Irish Miracle brought together hundreds of volunteers for a morning of generosity and service, as St. Patrick’s Catholic High School carried on its cherished tradition for the 41st year. On Saturday, December 7, students, staff, and community members braved snowy weather to collect 4,500 bags of non-perishable food and hygiene items, as well as $1,133.25 in monetary donations.
While most routes were covered, some areas relied on what organizers call a “drive-by pickup”—volunteers without students driving through routes to pick up bags left on porches. This adjustment ensures no donation is left behind, even when canvassers are in short supply.
After canvassers completed their routes, many students stayed to sort and box donations, which filled three truckloads destined for the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s food bank. Inside the school, the hallways buzzed with energy as volunteers worked together to organize the goods by type and size.
A major highlight of the day was the Knights of Columbus’ pancake breakfast, offered free to all volunteers. Their delicious pancakes have become a staple of the event, providing a warm and welcome reward for everyone’s hard work.
“Irish Miracle is such an incredible tradition because it has an impact on everyone involved,” said Meg Woodward, St. Pat’s teacher and event organizer. “For the families receiving donations, it provides much-needed support during a difficult time of year. But it’s also so meaningful for our students and volunteers—they get to see how powerful it is to come together as a community and make a real difference. It’s an experience that stays with you.”
“This annual tradition fills my heart because it showcases the incredible spirit of our St. Pat’s students and school community. Watching them come together to support those in need is a powerful reminder of the values we hold dear and the positive impact they can have,” said Scott Johnson, Director of Education.
Thanks go out to all staff and student organizers, to canvassers and sorting volunteers from across Sarnia-Lambton, as well as to the Knights of Columbus for supporting the annual event with their delicious hot breakfast.
