Excitement and pride filled the air as St. Clair Catholic schools hosted two incredible Special Olympics events this December, highlighting the joy of competition, the value of inclusion, and the power of community.
On December 11, St. Pat’s welcomed athletes, supporters, and community members to a 3-on-3 Special Olympics basketball tournament. The gymnasium was packed with cheering fans, peer supporters, and proud parents. The electric atmosphere was a testament to the enthusiasm for the athletes—not just from St. Clair Catholic but also from other schools and boards. The event showcased remarkable athleticism, determination, and school spirit.
One week later, on December 18, St. Angela Merici hosted an elementary-level Special Olympics sports festival. Students from across the board arrived ready to compete in a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, and curling. Participating schools included St. Angela Merici (host), St. Anne, Holy Trinity, Holy Family, and St. Joseph.
Shae-Lyn Strangio, Special Education Resource Teacher, shared her excitement about the event’s success. “Last year was our first event at the school, and our students could not be more excited for today and to participate again. Some brought friends with them, and they’re all wearing their school spirit wear with pride today,” she said.
Approximately 30 to 50 young athletes participated, each showcasing their skills and enthusiasm. One student, Jaunse, summed up the energy of the day: “I think this Olympics is so good. My favourite is soccer!” When asked about his upcoming competitions, Jaunce added, “I think I’m gonna do it—let’s go!”
The events not only provided athletes with opportunities to shine but also offered meaningful experiences for student volunteers. St. Angela Merici students Aubrey and Miley reflected on their roles. “This is the second time we’ve done this, and it’s really fun volunteering,” said Miley. “It’s nice seeing all the student athletes have fun and smile,” added Aubrey.
Ryan Colpitts, Program Developer with the Special Olympics, was on-site to ensure everything ran smoothly. “Our sports festival in Chatham is great. We’re so excited to be back here for the second year. At the end of the day, it’s all about making sure the kids have fun and that we stay engaged with the community,” he said. These events are a celebration of the athletes’ hard work and dedication while fostering leadership and community among volunteers and staff. St. Clair Catholic’s commitment to inclusivity and student success was on full display, as students shared the joy of connecting with peers from different schools. The Special Olympics events are truly a highlight of the school year, inspiring everyone involved to cheer, participate, and dream big.
