Students from St. Michael, Bright’s Grove had the incredible opportunity to participate in the annual Sing for the Sting initiative at the Sarnia Sting’s Teddy Bear Toss game on Sunday, December 1st. The event, presented by Finch Ford Lincoln, was held during the Sting’s matchup against the Saginaw Spirit.
The excitement began with St. Michael students proudly taking to the ice to sing both the Canadian and American national anthems, their voices ringing out beautifully throughout the arena. When the Sting scored their first goal, a spectacular moment followed as thousands of teddy bears were thrown onto the ice by enthusiastic fans. The plush toys, destined to brighten the upcoming Christmas season for children in need, were collected for local charities. Since its inception, the Teddy Bear Toss has brought in over 80,000 stuffed animals for the community.
Adding to the memorable experience, St. Michael students suited up in safety gear and joined the players on the ice to help gather the teddy bears. Working together, they loaded the toys into a Ford truck, creating a heartwarming scene of teamwork and joy.
Principal Stephen DeGurse reflected on the experience, saying, “It was an incredible opportunity for our students to sing at a Sarnia Sting game and cheer on their local team. The excitement of being part of the game and helping collect teddy bears made this an unforgettable day for everyone involved.”
The excitement didn’t end there. As part of the Sarnia Sting’s Confident Kids Program, presented by Progressive Auto Sales, Sting players later visited St. Michael, Bright’s Grove. Every class had the chance to engage with the players, learning hockey skills and enjoying a fun-filled day of activity. The visits also emphasized the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle, mental health awareness, and following one’s dreams.
“We are so grateful to the Sting for their generosity and commitment to our students and schools,” said Scott Johnson, Director of Education. “This was an incredible opportunity for the students at St. Michael, Bright’s Grove, to experience the thrill of athletics and develop meaningful connections through sports and teamwork.”
For the students of St. Michael, it was more than just a day at the rink—it was an unforgettable celebration of community, generosity, and pure joy. From singing their hearts out to gathering teddy bears and learning from the pros, the Sing for the Sting initiative left students inspired and full of treasured memories.
