From Kindness to Self-Care: MindUP Fair Brings Learning to Life at Gregory A Hogan

The halls of Gregory A Hogan school buzzed with excitement as students of all ages came together for a one-of-a-kind MindUP Fair—an event dedicated to exploring mindfulness, kindness, and self-care. It wasn’t just an ordinary school day; it was a day where the entire school community dove into the world of mental well-being through creativity, curiosity, and collaboration.

At the heart of the fair were six intermediate classes—about 150 Grade 6 to 8 students—who stepped into leadership roles as booth hosts. Each group embraced a MindUP theme, from mindfulness and self-care to the five senses, designing interactive presentations that made learning about mental health both fun and meaningful. The booths didn’t just offer information—they invited participation, with hands-on activities like sensory experiments, relaxation techniques, and mindfulness exercises. Younger students eagerly moved from booth to booth, soaking up knowledge and exploring new ways to care for their minds and bodies.

More than 400 primary and junior students toured the fair, greeted by their older peers with enthusiasm and encouragement. The collaborative energy was infectious, with younger students looking up to their older mentors and teachers celebrating the creativity on display. The day wasn’t just about learning—it was about connection.

“It was incredible to see our older students take on such a meaningful role, sharing their knowledge and creativity with younger peers,” said Chris Preece, Manager of Mental Health Services. “This fair showed how mindfulness can bring people together and create a sense of connection and well-being for everyone involved.”

The MindUP Fair wasn’t just a hit with the students—it left a lasting impression. Younger students walked away with a better understanding of mental health concepts and practical tools for self-care. Meanwhile, the older students discovered the rewards of leadership, teamwork, and the joy of making a difference.

By the end of the day, the fair had sparked more than just conversations about mental health—it had created a ripple effect of positivity that will carry on long after the booths were packed up.
