Empowering Students, Strengthening Connections: The Impact of UCC’s Black Graduation Coach

At Ursuline College Chatham (UCC), Pelumi Akinyemi is making a meaningful impact as St. Clair Catholic’s Black Graduation Coach, a role dedicated to mentorship, advocacy, and student success. Through his work, he is fostering a school environment where Black students feel seen, supported, and empowered to achieve their goals.

Mr. Akinyemi has spearheaded several initiatives at UCC, most notably the creation of the Student Affinity Space—a welcoming environment where Black students come together to share experiences, celebrate their cultures, and build connections. The space has become a cornerstone of inclusivity at UCC, inviting non-Black students to engage in meaningful conversations and strengthen allyship within the school community.

“My time here has been nothing short of incredible,” Mr. Akinyemi shares. “Seeing students walk into the Affinity Space and immediately light up, knowing they are in a place where they belong, is the most rewarding feeling. This space isn’t just a room—it’s a home within the school where students can be unapologetically themselves, share their voices, and uplift one another. Watching them grow in confidence and pride makes every moment of this work worth it.”

Beyond providing a space for connection, Akinyemi’s role focuses on dismantling barriers to academic success. He works closely with teachers and administrators across the district to address challenges Black students may face, provide guidance on post-secondary opportunities, and connect students with career mentorship and development programs.

Lisa Harnarine, Principal of UCC, highlights the importance of this role. “The Black Graduation Coach initiative has been a game-changer in providing targeted support and advocacy for our students. It ensures that Black students have a dedicated mentor who understands their experiences, champions their success, and helps them navigate their academic journey with confidence. The positive impact is being felt across the entire school community.”

Through his leadership and daily interactions with students, Mr. Akinyemi is helping create a more inclusive and supportive school culture. His work is a reflection of St. Clair Catholic’s ongoing commitment to equity, belonging, and student achievement.
