Jackson Cain, a Grade 8 student at St. Peter Canisius Catholic School in Watford, has made waves at the Youtopia competition, earning the Innovation Award and a $100 prize for his creative business idea—custom-designed fishing lures.
The Youtopia program, run through the University of Windsor, gives students hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, guiding them through the process of developing and pitching their own micro-businesses. Students worked in small groups or as solo entrepreneurs, creating everything from handmade soap and fashion accessories to tools and birdhouses. Competing against students from other schools, Jackson’s unique idea stood out, securing him the top prize for innovation.

“It was really cool to think like an entrepreneur and design my own fishing lures,” said Jackson. “I can’t wait to try my prototype once the lakes and rivers thaw!”
Jackson wasn’t the only standout—his entire Grade 8 class embraced the challenge, learning valuable skills in marketing, budgeting, and problem-solving. Two groups from St. Peter Canisius advanced to the next round, showcasing the creativity and dedication of the students.
“I watched my students come up with ideas, refine them, and bring them to life—it was incredible,” said Brooke Smyth, Grade 8 teacher at St. Peter Canisius. “They thought like real business owners, tackling everything from branding to budgeting. I’m so proud of all of them, and especially Jackson for thinking outside the box and making his vision a reality.”
Youtopia provided an exciting real-world experience, and for Jackson, it may just be the start of an entrepreneurial journey.
