Remembering Pope Francis

On Easter Monday morning, we awoke to the sorrowful news of the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. As a people of faith and hope, we take comfort in the promise of eternal life and give thanks for his life of loving service, humble leadership, and unwavering discipleship.

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis inspired the world with his deep compassion, courageous advocacy, and steadfast commitment to those most in need. His words and witness have reminded us that Catholic schools are not only places of learning, but communities where students grow in faith as disciples of Christ—called to bring healing, joy, and hope to the world.

As we continue our journey through the Jubilee Year—a year Pope Francis named Hope for the World—his call to build a more just, merciful, and united world is especially present in our hearts.

Bishop Fabbro has shared a statement about the passing of Pope Francis:

“News of the death of Pope Francis has been received with great sadness. Catholics, and non-Catholics around the world, have a profound appreciation for his papacy and his outstanding leadership. We mourn his loss and thank God for the humble witness he gave all of us.” -Most Reverend Ronald P. Fabbro, CSB, Bishop of London

“Let us give thanks to God for giving us such a good shepherd, an eloquent teacher of the joy of the Gospel, a humble witness, and a fellow pilgrim of hope. May the love and hope that Pope Francis found in the Risen Lord continue to radiate through our lives, and may he receive the reward promised to good and faithful servants who were heralds of the Good News of the Kingdom of God.” – Most Reverend William T. McGrattan, President, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

Beginning today, flags at all St. Clair Catholic schools and offices will be lowered to half-mast until further notice. In the days ahead, students will have the opportunity to reflect on the life and legacy of Pope Francis through prayer and classroom learning—rooted in our Catholic faith and in the values he lived so deeply: compassion, service, and justice.

Let us join together in prayer for the soul of Pope Francis, and for all who mourn his passing. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
