Last week, secondary students from St. Pat’s and UCC were invited to pause, reflect, and connect during a powerful keynote presentation by internationally acclaimed speaker Sam Demma. His message — rooted in self-reflection, perseverance, and mental wellness — offered students an opportunity to unpack the emotional “backpacks” they carry and consider what they may no longer need to hold onto.
Sam’s “Empty Your Backpack” presentation was delivered live at both schools and livestreamed to Grade 6-8 students across the system. Through powerful storytelling and moments of honest vulnerability, Sam created a space where students felt seen, heard, and supported. His words challenged them to let go of self-doubt, rethink harmful labels, and turn their focus toward purpose, possibility, and personal growth.

“It was such a joy to welcome Sam into our schools,” said Chris Preece, Manager of Mental Health Services. “He has an incredible way of reaching students — of meeting them exactly where they are and helping them feel empowered to move forward. The impact of his visit was felt immediately and will be remembered for a long time.”
The event served as a meaningful complement to St. Clair Catholic’s mental health programming, aligning with curriculum modules in Grades 7, 8 and 10, and underscoring the importance of open conversations about mental health across all grade levels. Most importantly, it brought students together — not just to listen, but to share in the work of letting go, lifting each other up, and moving forward, lighter than before.
