Grade 5 students from St. Clair Catholic District School Board, Hillside, and Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig Elementary Schools came together for two exciting days centered around lacrosse and land-based learning — blending Indigenous culture, teamwork, and physical activity.
Building on years of lacrosse programming and last year’s professional development day, this event expanded to include hands-on learning stations led by PE teachers and high school lacrosse players. The collaboration brought the sport to life beyond the field, connecting students to the cultural roots of lacrosse while encouraging active participation and mentorship. Students not only learned about lacrosse but also engaged in archery, social songs, and learning about hunting and experiencing traditional games.

The energy was contagious as students eagerly moved from station to station, motivated by high school athletes who led games and drills with enthusiasm and encouragement. Many students called it “the best day ever,” energized by the chance to learn, play, and connect in an outdoor setting.
Cortnee Goure, Indigenous Education Lead, shared, “Lacrosse is more than just a game. Experiences like these create lasting memories and meaningful reflections that help students build respect, identity, and community.”

Thanks to the dedication of Indigenous Knowledge Carriers and Elders, teachers, coaches, and student leaders, these two days of lacrosse and land-based learning left a positive and lasting impact on all involved.
