Sun, Spirit and Sportsmanship Shine at Kent County Track & Field Meet

With clear skies and contagious energy, student-athletes from across Chatham-Kent gathered at Ursuline College on June 4 for the annual Kent County Track & Field Meet—a day marked by friendly competition, personal milestones, and school pride.

The event opened with a heartfelt welcome from Lisa Demers, Director of Education, who offered words of encouragement, a blessing, and sincere thanks to the many volunteers, coaches, and staff who made the day possible.

“Opportunities like this allow our students to showcase their athleticism, determination, and teamwork,” said Demers. “It’s incredible to witness the joy and pride they feel, whether they’re crossing the finish line or cheering on a classmate.”

UCC Principal Lisa Harnarine extended a warm greeting to the visiting athletes, inviting them to feel at home in the halls and on the field of what may one day be their future high school.

The first event of the day was a fan favourite—the PEOPEL races for students with physical exceptionalities. These races, filled with courage and celebration, drew enthusiastic cheers from peers, staff, and families, setting the tone for a day full of spirit and support.

From sprints to long-distance runs, high jump to shot put, students showcased their skills across a full schedule of events. After a year of practice and preparation, athletes arrived eager to compete, challenge themselves, and cheer each other on.

This year saw an incredible ten meet records broken—an exciting testament to the talent and dedication of young athletes across the region. Among the record breakers were:

  • Gabby J. (St. Joseph), Grade 8 Girls 800m – 2:38.77
  • Mimo A. (St. Angela Merici), Grade 8 Girls Long Jump – 4.45m
  • Emerson A. (Monsignor Uyen), Grade 8 Boys 400m – 58.24 and 800m – 2:14.83
  • Elonzo R. (Christ the King), Grade 7 Boys 200m – 26.06
  • Mya D. (St. Anne), Grade 6 Girls Long Jump – 4.03m and Triple Jump – 8.64

  • Jeri A. (St. Angela Merici), Grade 3 Boys 100m – 14.87 and 200m – 30.53

“The Track & Field Meet is an opportunity for everyone to shine,” said Jen Chickowski, Early Childhood Educator at St. Teresa of Calcutta and one of the event’s organizers. “It’s about personal bests, healthy competition, and a shared sense of celebration for both students and staff.”

Whether chasing a medal or a new personal record, every athlete brought heart, determination, and a true sense of sportsmanship. With perfect weather and support from across the St. Clair Catholic community, this year’s meet was a vibrant celebration of athletic excellence and the joy of coming together.
