Un vrai délice! French Immersion Students Learn Through Food and Story

Students at Gregory A. Hogan and Christ the King French Immersion Catholic Schools recently had the opportunity to explore French culture in a deliciously interactive way, thanks to a special visit from Chef à l’école. The hands-on cultural experience brought French language, cuisine, music, and storytelling into the classroom for students in Grades 4 to 8 in the French Immersion program.

During the one-day workshop, students rolled up their sleeves and baked lavender and lemon shortbread cookies—a traditional French recipe. As the cookies baked, students learned to play the spoons, a musical instrument deeply rooted in French-Canadian folk music. The experience didn’t stop there. Chef Suzanne, who led the sessions, shared stories of French culture and her own Métis-Canadian heritage, offering students a meaningful connection to French history in Canada.

“What a fantastic experience for our students,” said Kelly Westman, French Curriculum Consultant with St. Clair Catholic. “They were able to practise their French in a fun, authentic setting while cooking, making music, and learning about culture—it brought the language to life in a way that was exciting and memorable.”

While the cookies baked, Chef Suzanne engaged students with storytelling and conversation about her French and Métis roots, helping them connect language learning to lived experience.

“It was such a rich day of learning,” said Angèle Monette, principal of Christ the King French Immersion School. “Nos élèves étaient captivés! They were immersed in language, culture, and community in such a meaningful way. We are so grateful for this opportunity.”

The program was such a hit that Chef Suzanne has already been invited back to visit Monsignor Uyen and St. Anne’s Blenheim French Immersion students next year.
