Sewing the Seeds of Friendship at St. Anne’s Sewing Club

What started as a short-term after-school activity quickly grew into something much more meaningful at St. Anne Catholic School in Blenheim. The newly formed Sewing Club, launched in mid-April by teacher Mrs. Friesen has become a hub of creativity, connection, and skill building.

Originally planned to run for just two months, the club saw such enthusiasm from students, staff, families and volunteers alike that it continued right through to the end of May—and plans are already in the works for its return next year.

Each week, students in Grades 5 and 6 rolled up their sleeves to dive into hands-on projects, learning every step of the process from threading the sewing machine to pinning, cutting, and stitching. With guidance from Mrs. Friesen, Lorraine, a grandmother of a student, Joss, a mother, and a growing group of other dedicated volunteers, the students tackled an impressive list of creations, including zippered pouches, microwavable popcorn bags, pillowcases, lip gloss holders, toiletry bags, Easter egg pouches, bookmarks, and more.

The room buzzed with excitement each week—not just from the sound of sewing machines, but from laughter, shared stories. It was clear that making something by hand brought immense joy to these young students. For many students, the club offered a chance to try something completely new; for others, it was a way to build on the skills they’d learned at home or in earlier years with Mrs. Friesen when she taught them in grade 3/4.

“Sewing Club is so much more than just working with fabric and machines,” Mrs. Friesen said. “It’s been incredible to see students from different grades come together, share what they know, and celebrate each other’s successes. The friendships they’re building and the way they support one another has truly made this club a special place in our school community.”

Parent volunteer Josselyne Segeren said the club became a special part of her week too. “Sewing club has turned into a tradition for me and my daughter,” she shared. “Every week, I look forward to seeing this amazing group of students and helping them bring their projects to life. There’s such a warm, welcoming energy in the room—it’s truly something special to be part of.”

Grade 6 student Claire Knotek reflected on how it all began for her: “I was in Mrs. Friesen’s class for grade 4 and I was really inspired because I liked how sewing was in the class, so I thought, why not give it a try again?” When asked what was the best thing she’s made at sewing club, she smiled and replied, “New friends.” Claire also praised the volunteers for their kindness and constant support.

Ben, a Grade 5 student, remembered the early struggles that came with learning something new—but also the rewards. “Every time I went up to the sewing machine it would break down and stop working, but that made it fun because I got to fix the machine and learn how to sew,” he said. “I still struggle with the bobbin, but I’ve gotten really good at sewing, and I love it. Sewing club teaches you patience, how to sew, and how to make friends.”

As one stitch leads to another, the story of the St. Anne Sewing Club continues to unfold—and next year promises even more warmth, laughter, and handmade magic.

The St. Anne Sewing Club would like to thank all of who have supported them in getting this new adventure started.
