Diversity Kits Help to Promote Equity and Inclusive Practices in St. Clair Catholic Schools

Students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Tilbury recently experienced the difficulties and challenges faced by some of their peers who have varying abilities, through Diversity Kits, developed by the Board’s Special Education Team.

Students of all grades rotated through six stations, with varying activities that challenge their awareness of the experiences of others.  From vision – wearing blurry goggles to read; to gross motor skills – walking while holding a ball between their legs; to communicating without talking – using only gestures and signals; among others – students experience everyday tasks through a different lens.

“This social emotional learning (SEL) helps to build a sense of belonging and engagement among our students,” says Lisa Walker, Principal of St. Joseph Catholic School.  “It is important learning as we support students to build healthy relationships and develop new social skills to embrace diversity, equity and inclusion through a lens of empathy and resilience.”

The diversity kits are available to schools across the district.  Through the integration of SEL, Catholic values and academic instruction, they provide learners the opportunity to develop critical transferable skills through a holistic approach to inclusive education.
