Grade 7 and 8 Students in St. Clair Catholic Wallaceburg Schools Experience the Trades in the Skills Ontario Tech Truck

Students in Grades 7 and 8 from the three St. Clair Catholic Wallaceburg schools had an opportunity recently to visit the Skills Ontario technology truck at the Catholic Education Centre.  In addition to the truck, students also rotated through STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities in the Ursuline Boardroom and the St. Louis Room at the CEC.

“The Skills Ontario truck and STEM activities provide a rich opportunity for our intermediate students to engage in hands-on learning in pathways they may not have previously experienced or considered,” says Lisa Demers, Director of Education.

The Ontario government has invested $5 million in the development of three technology trailers, which are deployed across Ontario.  They visit schools, career fairs and First Nations communities to promote the skilled trades.  Simulators give students an opportunity to experience heavy equipment operation, welding, plumbing, electrical work, hair dressing and cake decorating, among other trades.

“This equipment is very realistic and offers kids a hands-on opportunity to try out a wide range of tech fields,” says Jessie Fram, Skills Ontario Trades and Tech Truck Program Facilitator.  “It shows students there are many opportunities and pathways that lead directly to the world of work following high school.”

Mr. Fram says the trucks have become so popular that two more are scheduled to be on the road sometime early in the New Year.
