Dress Down Days Bring Record-Breaking Support to Local Women’s Shelters

Led by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA), all employees of the St. Clair Catholic District School Board participated in a week-long Dress Down Days initiative, held from Monday, November 24 to Friday, November 28, 2025.  Staff were encouraged to dress casually while making donations to support the vital work of the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre and the Women’s Interval Home of Sarnia-Lambton.  These organizations provide life-saving services and safety to women and children experiencing crisis—needs that become even more urgent during the Christmas season.

“Our staff’s generosity and compassion shine each year,” said Brian Breault, President, OECTA St. Clair – Elementary.  “This initiative is a meaningful way to support women and children in need at Christmas.”

Thanks to the remarkable generosity of staff across the district, this year’s campaign raised a record-breaking total of more than $20,500.  This extraordinary achievement reflects the deep commitment of our Catholic education community to living out our Baptismal call to serve those most in need.  Using these contributions, Christmas gifts were thoughtfully purchased and delivered to both shelters, bringing moments of joy and hope to families during a challenging time.  Special thanks are extended to Wayne and Cathy Bechard, and Jim and Anita O’Brien, who generously ensured that all gifts for the shelters were purchased with care and compassion.

“This campaign is an incredible example of what can happen when we work together with a shared purpose,” said Chad Coene, Unit President, OECTA St. Clair – Secondary.  “The unity and generosity shown across our unions and the district reflect a deep sense of compassion and a collective desire to stand with those who are facing their most difficult moments.”

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to CUPE, APSSP, CPCO, and senior administration, along with Catholic Education Centre and Facility Services staff who so generously participated,” said Lisa Demers, Director of Education.  “I am especially grateful to Brian Breault, Chad Coene, and their OECTA Executive Members for their leadership and dedication in bringing this initiative to life once again, offering our community a meaningful opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of women and children in crisis.”

Lisa Demers adds, “This initiative is about more than fundraising—it is about hope, dignity, and reminding families in crisis that they are seen, supported, and not alone.”
